In the 2011 election, Washington voters approved Initiative 1183, which shuttered Washington’s state-run liquor system, a Prohibition-era artifact. The day before the measure was to go into effect, the Washington State Supreme Court upheld the law on a 5-4 vote. Read the opinion (pdf).
