This project was launched in 2008 in a University of Washington class; the founding students wanted to provide information that was in short supply – information on state initiatives. Our goal is that Fact Check WA will be an unbiased source for voters when they look for information on state initiatives.
Who are the contributors?
- Andrea Gail Sherrodd
Andrea has a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Washington. During her time as an undergraduate, she worked at The Seattle Times as an Editorial Page Intern and freelanced for a number of local publications. She currently works in online marketing, mostly as an email marketer, and is working on completing a Masters of Communication in Digital Media (MCDM) at the University of Washington. She is most interested in filming and editing video, photography, and the art of digital storytelling.
- Betsy Hauenstein
Betsy is a lifelong learner and a current student working towards a Master of Communication in Digital Media. She received her B.A. in Comparative Literature: Cinema Studies and Anthropology and is currently working as a non-profit fundraiser. When she isn’t studying the social implications of technology, you can find Betsy spending far too much time watching movies with her other half, cooking up a storm and taking far too many photos of food and of her two adorable pets, Napoleon and Butters.
- Dan Thornton< Daniel is a film maker and educator. His interest in politics goes back to his family's love of politics and journalism. He grew up in a house that received three newspapers a day and made a great celebration every election day.
He is currently enrolled it the University of Washington's Master of Communication in Digital Media program. He is also on the Communication Studies faculty at Bellevue College./li>

- Paolo Mottola
Paolo Mottola is the social media specialist at Eddie Bauer, charged to manage all strategy and execution in social media channels for the Eddie Bauer and First Ascent brands. Previously he was a senior account executive and worked on communications and social strategies for clients including the US Army, Samsung and Microsoft. His career began as an editor at PRWeb, an online newswire that pioneered social media news releases and SEO techniques. Paolo earned his B.A. in journalism from Western Washington University in 2005 and was an honorary journalism department scholar. His graduate studies are focused on how digital media impacts social commerce and provides a platform for new public influencers and advocates to emerge.

- Thor A Tolo
Thor is the newest anchor for KOMO 1000 (97.7 FM) – Washington’s most respected radio news source. He is a broadcaster with 17 years’ major market experience in television and radio. In 1989 Thor’s Emmy Award winning sportscasting career brought him to the NBC owned TV station in Cleveland. In 1993 he began hosting shows and anchoring KFAN’s postgame call-in programs for the Minnesota Vikings Radio Network in Minneapolis/St. Paul. After moving to Pittsburgh in 1995, Thor hosted a nightly talk show for seven years at the world’s first radio station, KDKA. In 2004 he moved to Seattle for a four-year run as afternoon host of “Live From Seattle.” Thor and his wife, Shelly, live in Belltown where their second office for TOLO Events, LLC, is located. It is an event planning company specializing in high-end galas for major corporate and non-profit events.
The project is overseen by Kathy E. Gill, faculty in the UW Department of Communication.
